In a diary, you primarily are recording the events of your life. A journal is less of a historical record than a place where you can write down your feelings about the things that are happening in your life. In particular, people tend to use their journals to express their negative feelings about their life’s events.

One form of journaling that’s particularly powerful in conquering fear is to write about past events that scared you or left you helpless. Such events often still resonate in our current lives, in the form of irrational fears based in those long-past events. Used well, a journal can help you to work through your feelings about events that have hurt you deeply. As you work through these feelings, they will automatically loosen their grip on you.

Another form helps you deal with your fears about the possible consequences of actions or decisions you will be making. In this case, you would write out your fears, then write down ways you could cope even if these worst case scenarios do come to pass.
