Panic Attacks – Can They Be Stopped Without Taking Drugs?

Panic attacks, or anxiety attacks as they are usually one and the same, can strike you out of the blue. They hit you like lightening and probably do as much damage. If you have had one I’m sure you pray you don’t get another. Well your prayers could be about to come true.

BAM! The First Attack Hits

My wife had her very first (and most frightening) panic attack while she was out driving in our car. Clearly this could have had disastrous consequences. As soon as we knew we were safe and the initial shock had died down, shock for us both I might add. We made an appointment to see our doctor.

The doctor gave us the usual garbage about it being all in her head, no real danger, blah blah blah. We then got prescribed some beta blockers. I say “we” because even though it was my wife having it, I was feeling like part of it all. If that makes any sense. Beta blockers work by slowing the heart. By doing this a panic attack shouldn’t build as the heart can’t race out of control.

We tentatively went out in the car again and sure enough at the same junction my wife started to feel an attack coming on. The upshot was, she had a full blown panic attack. Albeit without the racing heart rate. She said it was the strangest feeling having a panic attack but at the same time feeling quite calm.

Put The Drugs Where They Belong….In The Trash

The drugs went straight in the trash as soon as we got home. Me driving this time. A full 9 months went by and she never drove the car once. She had mixed feelings about it because she didn’t suffer panic attacks when she wasn’t driving.

We couldn’t let this situation go on. Her not being able to drive for fear of having an attack at the wheel. I did some in depth research on the web and we came across various techniques to try. Which we did with varying results. We never found anything that really worked for long.

We Tried ‘Em All

We then happened across yet another “method” to supposedly stop them. As we had tried everything we found so far we tried this also. Initial results were ok. We knew any success was because of the method and not the drugs, which she wasn’t taking. The first time she drove she felt an attacked looming. However she quickly put the method into practice and got through the attack ok.

We had a chat later and she reported she definitely had an attack. But using the methods she was able to tone it down considerably. This knowledge alone boosted her confidence no end. She was sure that next time she had an attack she had the tools to halt it in its tracks, although it didn’t work out as good as that.

Easy Does It

Again though, she managed to lessen its effects. She did this every time it happened. She made it less and less every time. It wasn’t too long (weeks) before she felt confident enough to see an attack coming and to halt it from going any further.

If panic attacks are the bane of your life you can either do nothing, or see your doctor and try some form of medication. Either way there’s a good chance you won’t get better any time soon.

Last week I found an article on sciencedaily.com regarding a study carried out on aged mice bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and the boost that caffeine gave to reversing memory loss. The article started with the tease that “Coffee drinkers may have another reason to pour that extra cup.”  It continued by discussing back-to-back studies published online July 6 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease that proved that caffeine notably decreased abnormal levels of the protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease, both in the brains and in the blood of mice exhibiting symptoms of the disease.

However, before you decide to add an extra cup of coffee to your morning ritual, let me, Dr. Jamie Phillips elaborate by saying that under “Related Stories” on the website were at least two articles reporting on studies that professed to prove the negative effects of caffeine, “Morning Jolt of Caffeine May Mask Serious Sleep Problems,” and “Coffee Consumption Linked To Increased Risk Of Heart Attack For Persons With Certain Gene Variation.”

It seems to me that there are probably studies that will corroborate, or at least bolster, nearly any view point, especially when it has to do with age-related health issues. The “yin-yang” of caffeine benefits-deficits certainly aren’t, of course, the only ones. But, it did get me to thinking about the probability that there will not ever be simply “one thing” that will incontrovertibly assist we, humans, in living longer, healthier lives. Humans are dynamic, biological creatures. We are free to engage in life. We’re not confined to a cage! And, let’s face it, though Alzheimer’s disease is likely on the rise, obviously we, cage-free humans, have not been “bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease,” therefore caffeine isn’t going to be the “one thing” that is going to reverse or prevent it.

The human body is an exquisite, intricate system that is based on homeostasis, that is to say, balance. It makes sense, then, that good health is about a healthy, balanced way of living, rather than our jumping on the bandwagon of the latest health study and “doing” or “overdoing” one specific thing in the hope that it will reverse all of the other immoderate and unhealthy things we do to our bodies.

I believe, as a doctor of chiropractic in Santa Barbara, that every single day we have an opportunity to make healthy choices for our body, decisions that will help us to live longer, healthier lives. We know what truly “feels” right and what doesn’t when it comes to what is good for us.
